We’re all used to spending the next morning arguing about who should have won what, but the really committed will try to watch the Academy Awards live – though if you want to watch the Oscars in the UK you might be in for a late night. We’ve rounded up everything you need to know about the 2022 event including the hosts, nominees, how to stream the event and more.
When are the 2022 Oscars?
The 2022 Academy Awards are currently scheduled to be held in Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on Sunday 27 March 2022 at 8pm ET/5pm PT/1am GMT (28 March). It will be broadcast on TV and around the world. Like last year, eligibility for the Oscars has changed to accommodate for COVID, with digital releases being considered for awards. Typically the show only considers films that have been released in theatres, but if they did that this year there wouldn’t be enough titles to fill all the nomination slots.
Which channel is the Oscars on?
If you’re in the US, the Oscars will air on ABC. In the UK, Sky Cinema will air the event on the sub-channel Sky Cinema Oscars (channel 302), starting with the red carpet coverage and then the entire awards ceremony. This will be followed up with a highlights reel on Sky Showcase HD at 7pm on Monday 28 March. If you’re not already a Sky Cinema customer, you can sign up from Sky’s website. Otherwise, you might be better off watching it online through Now – more on that next.
How to watch the Oscars online
US viewers who won’t be near a TV have an easy option – head to the ABC website to stream the whole show live or watch it through the ABC app. If you’re in the UK and don’t have a Sky account, or would simply rather stream the Oscars ceremony than watch it on TV, all of Sky’s coverage be streamed online through Now. Now’s Cinema Membership costs £9.99 per month, but new customers can often get deals, If you don’t want to pay for Now then you could always try to use a VPN to access the free ABC stream in the US – though be warned that it’s not guaranteed to work. Our current top VPN recommendation is NordVPN, but take a look at our full VPN ranking to find out more.
Who is hosting the 2022 Oscars?
This year, the Oscars will have three hosts: Amy Schumer, Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes. This is the first ceremony in a while to have set hosts. There will also be musical performances from Beyoncé and Billie Eilish.
Who are the 2022 Oscar nominees?
The Power of the Dog and Dune are leading the nominations pack with 12 and 10 nods each. Both Belfast and West Side Story received seven nominations. Some of the biggest films of 2021 are also in the running for awards, including No Time to Die and Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s worth noting that not all awards categories will be presented in full during this year’s ceremony. Instead, a select number will be shown in the hour before the broadcast begins, and then edited into the programme. The categories receiving this treatment are documentary short, editing, make-up and hair, original score, production design, animated short, live-action short, and sound. Though the idea is to make the ceremony shorter to watch, the decision has been met with criticism from both industry folk and fans of the Oscars.
