The French based publisher showed off the new Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, a proper look at some Skull and Bones gameplay, and even a peek at the long awaited Beyond Good and Evil 2. We’re here to take you over everything that Ubisoft announced, so here we go!

Just Dance 2019

The show kicked off with a dancing panda and a marching band, who shimmied their way into the theatre to renditions of everything from Maroon 5’s Sugar to Elton John’s I’m Still Standing. This was to announce Just Dance 2019, coming to just about every non-mobile platform in October.

Beyond Good and Evil 2

We saw a beautiful trailer for Beyond Good and Evil 2 that made all the people I was watching it with stop talking completely, which is no small feat. I’d honestly watch an entire film based on what I saw in that trailer. The visuals were stunning, the direction was amazing, and the script and character design were spot on. Really interesting stuff. We saw Jade from BG&E one arrive at the end of the trailer looking fairly menacing. We’re not sure what that means yet, but we can’t wait to find out. They showed off some pre-alpha footage that looked great, although without context it was a little lost. They did say that transitioning between giant space battles and fighting on the ground was ‘seamless’ however. We don’t want to infer too much from a word, but that was a very interesting one to use. We’re keen to see what exactly that means. Joseph Gordon-Levitt then arrived on stage to announce that his company HitRecord would be helping Ubisoft put crowd created content into the game, everything from art and music, to radio shows and fashion design. This is a very interesting initiative and I’d love to look at it for it’s face value, but it is also a way for Ubisoft to get content into their game without paying Artists and Designers. You can be cynical about almost anything if you try hard enough though, so we’ll wait and see.

Trials Rising

Trials makes a return to our screens with Trials Rising. If you like Trials, then you’re in for some more Trials. If you don’t like Trials, then Trials Rising didn’t really seem to have anything new to try and change your mind. You’re going to flip and crash your way through Trials maps once again, no huge surprises here. Trials Rising will be out on February 2019, along with almost every other game apparently.

The Division 2

Much the same as Trials Rising will be providing more Trials, The Division 2 will be providing some more Division. I would really like to be excited about this game and I have to take my hat off to Ubisoft for all the love they’ve shown Division 1 in making it better over the years, but if you asked me what the difference between Division 1 and 2 is I still can’t really tell you. The setting has changed but the game looks identical to the first. Cover based shooting, fairly standard array of gadgets and drones. If you didn’t like the first Division game then there won’t be anything here to change your mind, from what we’ve seen. They did announce that we’d be getting free DLC and 8-player raids, but it really just looked like The Division 1.5. I would love to have my mind changed though!

Skull and Bones

I feel like this game has been on the horizon for a while, but now we finally get to see gameplay. The ‘shared world’ pirate RPG sees you controlling a ship and doing battle with the NPCs and players in multiplayer described as ‘shared world’. We got very little information on how this would work mechanically, but we did see a lot of gameplay. It reminded me a lot of the game Dreadnaught, as you control the movement and cannons on your ship as you attempt to out sail and out gun your opponents. The ship boarding scene we saw was just a scripted cut scene, which was a little disappointing. The game looked gorgeous, but I’m not entirely behind this one. Sea of Thieves had it’s issues, but the moment to moment gameplay of sailing a ship with your friends was fun. It doesn’t seem like we’ll find quite the same joy here.

Transference

Elijah Wood arrived on stage to tell us about his shiny new narrative-focused VR project. This game looks more than a little creepy, but if you’re into the psychological thriller stuff then this will be right up your street. If nothing else, it’s certainly an interesting project to watch.

Here we see Ubisoft and Nintendo cross over again, as Starfox arrives in the Starlink game. This is the game where you can (have to?) buy little models to attach to your controller, which will customise your spaceship in game. It’s an interesting idea, but the practicality of changing a weapon mid fight might be a bit much to tackle. Also, if I can just put on my cynical hat once more, it’s a great way to get people to spend more money on physical add ons for the game. I’m about 15 years too old to be the target audience for this one however.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Building on the fantastic success that was Assassin’s Creed Origins, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is looking equally good. You can play the game as a male or female, and your choices will change depending on this selection. I’m getting some BioWare vibes from this one in terms of the story, but more Assassin’s creed if it’s in the Origins vein is perfectly fine with us. That series has really turned around.
